Several factors which contribute to the development of grief and stress in professional caregivers are:

  1. The intimate care leads to a trust relationship and touch is bonding
  2. We may identify with the pain of the family
  3. The unmet goal of health care workers
  4. Loss of the assumption that good work = good out come
  5. Our own past and/or future losses
  6. Cumulative grief – on going
  7. Personal crisis outside the workplace

The challenge is to find a balance between EXPERIENCING our grief and CONTAINING our grief.
